The dangers of engineered food

The state of our health is dependent on the safety of our food supply! Can anyone argue with that?

Many scientists and nutritionists are coming to the conclusion that the dangers of engineered food are real and more important, probably more harmful than previously thought. Even some third world countries such as Zambia are against allowing genetically engineered maize, a staple in that countries food needs, as unacceptable. People, and some governments, are coming to understand that altering the DNA in food by introducing foreign genes for the purpose of enhancing a given trait, such as making it more resistant to insects, is messing with nature in an unsafe way leading to a danger of engineered food. We are talking about the basic food that is consumed the world over. The dangers of modified food could have serious negative consequences should it be proven to cause cancer or other health problems since these foods are shipped into many countries. Today, many of the foods you get in American and Canadian supermarkets have been genetically engineered, but you will never know it. No labeling is required. Odd, since a list of everything in the product is a requirement!

There is much to be concerned with these dangers of modified food (and by the way, modified food is the same as engineered food). Our particular concern, outside of the fact that our food is being tampered with in the first place, is that some of it is actually being injected with pharmaceuticals! This, in our opinion, is a ridiculous thing to do to food, forcing medications into people who most likely don't need them, may have an adverse reaction to them or may have an allergy. This is lunacy! The possibility of allergens in the food can be deadly to some. This alone makes the dangers of engineered foods real!

Primary crops grown through genetic engineering in 30 countries are:
  • cotton
  • corn
  • canola
  • alfalfa
  • a variety of sweet potatoes
  • cantaloupe
  • flax
  • radicchio
  • squash
  • bananas
  • strawberries
  • pineapples
  • cocoa beans (chocolate!)
  • zucchini
  • rice

  • Coming soon, if not already here, are fish,
fruits and nuts. Consumers rarely know if
what they are consuming has been engineered
or the possible health risks. This makes
the dangers of engineered food all the more
serious because those who might need
    to know don't know!

And don't overlook the many processed foods
you buy at the supermarket that contain
engineered ingredients. Included in this list:

  • frozen pizza
  • popcorn
  • cereals
  • many frozen foods
  • canned soup
  • (soup is too easy to make to EVER eat it canned so don't!)
  • sweeteners that come in colored
  • packets containing aspartame

We recommend you stay away from as many
processed foods as you can unless they come
from organic markets. These come under the heading
of the dangers of engineered food!

We are concerned about the danger of these foods and it's effects on the causes of cancer. Please support our efforts to fight cancer on every level.

Further, it's impossible to control cross pollination of crops that have been genetically engineered with those that have not. Pollen gets blown all around large areas in the wind. This could cause an unintended transfer of transgenes and have unknown effects on other organisms such as soil microbes. It could have a negative impact on surrounding flora and fauna. This causes a violation of the ethics regarding the natural organisms intrinsic value which could become compromised permanently. And what do you suppose happens when an engineered cow eats engineered food? The danger of engineered food is magnified. This is a danger of engineered food because of the possibility of animal genes in plants...or vice versa. To say nothing of what the process does to the animal.

Then there is the question of intellectual
    property. Intellectual property is basically
the ownership of ideas, even after those
ideas have been directed into products
or written documents. Those ideas are still
the property of the person or entity who had the
idea in the first place under ethical intellectual
property guidelines. This could lead to the
domination of the food supply by only a
few companies, increasing the domination for
    rich industrialized countries and represents
a danger of engineered food. We all know
what happens when any entity has absolute power...
    it breeds corruption!

Bottom line: the dangers of engineered food is real and it's wide spread and it has caused some deaths!

Antibiotic resistant genes that can react with other bacteria in humans and what damage is possible is not yet known. When added capriciously to these plants, it causes uncertainty as to any cancers that may be caused by this engineering. Different countries manage engineered foods differently and perhaps in a lax manner unleashing who knows what dangers of engineered food into the world food supply. Fortunately, some countries refuse to accept the dangers of engineered foods. The United States is not one of those countries. Ask why did the World Health Organization censure the UK in 2005 for banning these foods from their country? And did you know that the Japanese government paid out billions to several thousand Americans who became ill, some dying, from ingesting modified food?

There is also the hi-jacking of patents on GMOs which is pushing small farmers out of business and leaving the entire food supply in the hands of a handful of big agri-businesses that will be able to control prices. And it's suspected that one more danger of engineered food is that it will favor rich countries over the poorer ones. Currently in the USA, there are three agencies regulating genetically engineered food: The Department of Agriculture, The FDA and the EPA. We have trouble with allowing any of these agencies being in charge of America's food supply given past history with all of these agencies. We wonder if they speak with each other to transfer any information they have. When was the last time the government did anything without messing it totally up??? Do you trust the government, no matter how well meaning, to make these basic decisions on what you eat?

Once these genetically modified foods become world wide, the dangers increase with the probability that they will become irreversible. At that point, all the food we consume will be engineered to one degree or another. Does that, then, have the possibility of mutating with out own genes, changing our DNA for all time? Will this be just one unintended consequence of dangerous engineered food? And shouldn't consumers at least be told, through appropriate labeling, that a particular food has been modified through tampering with its DNA?

These are important questions to ask...and have answered.
Don't expect to get answers through commercial sources or companies who are doing this engineering. They have a vested interest in tampering with our food because it puts more business and money into their pockets. Again, let us say unequivocally that we are NOT against profit making companies. In fact, we believe that companies must make a profit... it's the incentive to do business. What we question is should they be doing it at the expense of consumers, through a dangerous food supply and without clear transparency?

And it's not just crops that are subjected to the dangers of engineered food. Animals are also being genetically modified to grow larger and faster. Hormones are routinely injected into food animals, even though we are already suffering from hormone overload. Have you noticed how much larger chicken breasts are these days? One breast that once was one serving is now at least two. We already are exposed to hormone overload and now, we are likely to be getting it in the meat we consume. Cattle, and perhaps pigs, are also being injected with anti-biotics. This is not what was ever intended by nature.
Cows Further, the dangers of modified foods include fibers, medicines, animal feed and vaccines for human consumption. Vaccines? Do we need vaccines in our food? The answer in our mind is clear: NO. Claims that foods are healthier due to containing more nutrients than naturally grown food are unproven. More testing should be done before any more of these dangerous engineered foods are introduced into our food supply. Higher yields in plant crops, beef, eggs, milk and chickens, etc. and more efficient processing may be of benefit, but at what cost. Any risk to our food supply is too big a risk. We are already seeing cancers occurring in ever higher numbers. Common sense tells us this could lead not only to more cancer but to other diseases, abnormalities and even disabilities. This is just too unproven to know for sure and many doctors and scientists are getting on board opposing this engineering.

    What can you do?

    • 1. Talk with an informed nutritionist to get some facts. Ask about the dangers of engineered foods. Be sure it is someone who is up to date on this issue.

    • 2. Research websites that do not have anything to gain surrounding this issue. Like ours!

    • 3. Write to your lawmakers and tell them you are aware of this issue and want it stopped.

    • 4. Contact food suppliers such as food stores, manufacturers, the FDA, the Department of Agriculture and anyone else you can think of and tell them you are opposed to engineered food.

    • 5. Spread the word about the dangers of engineered food to everyone you know and ask them to spread the word and take the above steps.

    • 6. Contact your local newspapers and television news departments.

    • 7. Discuss this with your own doctor and if they don't know what is happening (they often don't because this doesn't really come under their training), ask them to do some research.

    • 8. Do your own research!! Don't believe what you find on the internet unless you know it is a reliable source - and they are scarce!

    • 9. If there is a University in your area, contact the appropriate department head to see if any studies are being done and if so, get the results if you can.

    • Many people think they are helpless to do anything. I hear it constantly: "what can I do? I'm only one person." Balderdash. The power of one is incredible when put to work. It's within your power to make a difference and it's your responsibility to do so!
